How this artist breaks expectations

If you appreciate smart photography, you will love the work of José María Rodríguez Madoz, better known as Chema Madoz. The artist, born in Madrid on January 20, 1958, learned how to use a camera at the Image Teaching Center while pursuing a degree in Art History at Universidad Complutense in Madrid. What he excels in, however, is a craft that can hardly be taught: he has an incredible ability to play with expectations, associations, opposites, and similarities. His photographs catch you by surprise in that they always show an object in an unexpected context. To me, his arrangements are the visual companions of witty metaphors that aptly describe a feeling you’ve always had but could never find the right words for.
